Invokana Class Action Lawsuit

Invokana, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, was first viewed as a revolutionary drug that could treat patients with type 2 diabetes. However, instead of making blood sugar management easier, Invokana caused many patients to experience numerous serious side effects, some of them fatal. Patients suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure, bone issues, and more. These side effects were not listed on the warning label. Invokana was released on the market in the USA in 2013 and in Canada in May 2014. Miskin Law offices explain updates on the Invokana diabetes drug lawsuit and represent clients in Peterborough, Lindsay, Whitby, and Oshawa, Ontario, affected by the drug.

What Is Invokana?

Invokana is a drug of the SGLT2 inhibitors class that was developed to lower blood sugar levels. The most common side effects listed on the product’s website are changes in urination, genital yeast infections, and urinary tract infections. The problem is that many patients reported diverse and severe side effects beyond those listed. The Invokana lawsuit helps patients get compensation for their pain and suffering caused by the side effects not being adequately listed by the drug company.

Invokana’s Severe Side Effects

Health Canada issued a Dear Healthcare Professional Letter in 2016 advising medical personnel that life-threatening and fatal cases of diabetic ketoacidosis were being reported in patients taking Invokana. Health Canada issued another Dear Healthcare Professional Letter in September 2017 advising medical personnel that the drug had an approximately two-fold increased risk of surgical lower limb amputation, according to clinical studies. A black box warning of lower limb amputations was added to the product label. At the end of August 2018, the FDA issued a new warning to patients taking Invokana that it may be linked to a risk of developing Fournier’s gangrene. The most common adverse side effects of Invokana include:

  • Ketoacidosis
  • Bone Frailty
  • Kidney Damage
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
  • Renal Issues
